While the best of British sport were being honoured for their achievements during 2016, absent Bradley Wiggins has stirred up controversy with an Instagram post.

Ahead of Dave Brailsford’s appearance in front of a panel of MPs, Wiggins has been photoshopped in as Mel Gibson from the 1995 film Braveheart. The picture had the caption ‘They can never take my package!!’ written over the top of it, a take on a famous line from the film.

The package that Wiggins is referring to is the mystery package that was delivered to Team Sky at the 2011 Critérium du Dauphiné.

Courier Simon Cope, who was the British Cycling women’s road coach, travelled to the Dauphiné via Geneva airport bearing the package destined for Wiggins’ doctor. The flights were booked and paid for by British Cycling. The package was delivered to Richard Freeman. Cope returned to Geneva with Shane Sutton, then a prominent coach at British Cycling and Team Sky.
