After the LottoNL-Jumbo team announced that three riders were dismissed from the training camp in Girona, more details have emerged about the seriousness of the matter.

Antwan Tolhoek, Pascal Eenkhoorn and Juan José Lobato were yanked from the camp on Wednesday for using sleep medication.

Eenkhoorn and Tolhoek were found to be confused and acting strangely. However, Lobato was more serious; he was found asleep and initially could not be wakened. The panicked team leaders shook him more and more vigorously, but he remained unconscious.

“We saw that he was asleep. We tried to wake him up, but that didn’t work,” directeur sportif Merijn Zeeman told Nos.nl.

By the time an ambulance arrived, Lobato had woken up and walked into the ambulance.

“We put all the facts together. We now consciously take a distance, so that we can separate the ratio of emotion. On Wednesday we had a meeting with the whole team and everyone has taken away from what happened. The riders are really angry at these three and what they have done.”
