Tom Dumoulin will lead Team Sunweb at the 2017 Giro d’Italia, according to De Telegraaf.

After Steven Kruijswijk and Bauke Mollema have expressed their desire to focus on the Giro d’Italia, two other Dutch riders, Wilco Kelderman and Tom Dumoulin, will target the centenary edition of the Corsa Rosa.

“At first sight, it is a Tour de France that isn’t perfect to me if I try to fight for the general classification because of the limited time trial kilometers,” Dumoulin wrote on his Facebook page when the route of the Tour was announced.

“The course of the 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia looks beautiful! Nicely balanced with sprint stages, quite some time trial kilometers, but some brutal and legendary climbing as well like the Mortirolo and the Stelvio on stage 16 for example. Climbing these monsters will for sure create some epic battles,” Dumoulin commented on Facebook last October.

Riding in front of his home fans, Tom Dumoulin won the opening time trial stage at the 2016 Giro d’Italia in Apeldoorn. The 25-year-old Dutchman wore the maglia rosa leader’s jersey for the first week of the Giro before finally surrendering it on Stage 8.
