Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports that Sunweb has offered Romain Bardet a contract for 2021 as the team team looking to make the Frenchman their leader.
Bardet, who has finished as highly as second overall at the Tour de France, has ridden with AG2R La Mondiale since all the way back in 2012, but his contract ends this season.
“When the season starts again, talk about new riders for 2021 will start,” Sunweb manager Iwan Spekenbrink said earlier in the week.
Bardet’s manager admits that his rider is about to change teams. “But nothing is finished,” says Joona Laukka. “Not with Sunweb, nor with other teams. It’s quite easy to write down the names of teams where he could go. Those are teams with a strong ethics, even if you can never be one hundred percent sure of all the riders”.
Trek-Segafredo and Mitchelton-Scott were also linked to Bardet. The rider has been riding for AG2R La Mondiale since 2012. Three times he managed to win a stage in the Tour de France and in 2016 and 2017 he was on the final podium of the French Tour.
