Greipel wins Challenge Mallorca opener

Andre Greipel

Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) outsprinted Jonas Van Genechten (Cofidis) and Daniel McLay (Fortuneo – Vital Concept) to win Trofeo Porreres, the first race of the 2017 Challenge Mallorca.

Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom-RusVelo), Pablo Torres (Burgos-BH), Pello Olaberria (Euskadi-Murias) and Kersten Thiele of the German selection escaped early on and built a lead of about three minutes, but a mass sprint was inevitable as Lotto-Soudal carefully controlled the pace throughout the race.

Friday’s second race for the Serra de Tramuntana trophy will take the riders 153.9km from Soller to Deia.
