Evenepoel to skip the 2022 Giro to ride the Vuelta

Remco Evenepoel will probably ride the Vuelta a Espana next season and not the Giro d’Italia.

Patrick Lefevere wants to take the young Belgian ride to a higher level next season.

“We want him to be able to win a tough stage race first, such as Tirreno-Adriatico, the Dauphiné or the Tour de Suisse. Only then will we field him again in a three-week competition,” Lefevere announces.

“The idea is that he will ride the Vuelta a Espana instead of the Giro d’Italia. It would be a mistake to let him compete in both Italy and Spain next year. Remco is only 22 years old then: a Grand Tour in one year is enough for him. He didn’t start cycling as young as Tadej Pogacar.”

In principle, Evenepoel will start the new season in Argentina, at the Vuelta a San Juan (January 23-30). Tirreno-Adriatico would then be preferred to Paris-Nice, although that is not yet certain.

“We will choose some races based on the time trials”, says Lefevere.

“There will probably also be room for the Ardennes classics: on April 20, Evenepoel would be at the start of the Flèche Wallonne for the first time and four days later at the start of Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Possible program for Remco Evenepoel in 2022:
Vuelta a San Juan (30 January-6 February)
Tirreno-Adriatico (7-13 March)
Fleche Wallonne (20 April)
Liège-Bastogne-Liège (24 April)
Critérium du Dauphiné (5-12 June)
Tour de Suisse (12-19 June)
Vuelta a Espana (19 August-11 September)
