Davide Villella (Movistar) hit the front with a kilometre remaining, allowing Valverde best position ahead of a twisty finale. The Movistar leader outsprinted Alessandro Covi (UAE Team Emirates) and Jhonatan Restrepo (Androni-Sidermec).

Valverde moved into the overall lead after Juan Sebastian Molano (UAE Team Emirates), winner of the first two stages, was distanced.

He leads the GC by 7 seconds from Covi, with Restrepo 2 seconds further back in third.

“I am very happy for the victory,” said Valverde. “We started the stage with the idea of getting the victory, and we succeeded… even if the finish was unexpected. It was bad fortune that I crashed after the bicycle stumbled over the cables, but I think it didn’t leave any consequences. We will see how well I am after tonight to see how we can face tomorrow’s stage.”
