Van Aert, who won the Strade Bianche last Saturday, was the only rider able to follow Alaphilippe’s brutal attack in the ascent to the Poggio, some seven km from the finish. Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) took third place.
“I’m super happy. I can’t believe I’ve taken these two victories in a row,” van Aert said.
“I don’t have words actually. I know everyone says that when they win a Monument but to start the second part of the season like this… it’s crazy.”
Van Aert’s victory marks his first monument win and completes an incredible comeback after his serious injury at last year’s Tour de France.
What. A. Finish. ?
The first Classic of the year delivers a stunning finale as @WoutvanAert pips defending champion @alafpolak on the line.
