Chris Froome has won the stage 16 time trial in the Vuelta with 57s on Vincenzo Nibali and has now a 1min58s advantage over the Italian rider, who has retained the second place.
“I am quite satisfied”, said Vincenzo Nibali. “It was a very difficult ITT and the side wind was really strong and therefore you had to keep a high speed. In some sections I also made 100 rpm and a speed close to 80 km / h.“
“Chris Froome has done a very good performance with a route suited to him and tomorrow we expect another challenging stage. The ranking has changed in the first positions and tomorrow someone will have to attack if he wants to retrieve positions. We’ll see”.
“Vincenzo did a great job and has beaten many specialists”, commented SD Gorazd Śtangelj. “He is in a really good shape and tomorrow there is still a lot of climbs and he has proved that when he stays like this he always does great races”.
With stage number 17, in fact, the peloton will go back to climb again. From Villadiego to Los Muchacos of 180 km with a first-category climb and another one classified “Especial”.
