Tiesj Benoot extended has contract with Team DSM until the end of 2022, but an irreparable rift has developed in recent weeks and the team and Benoot will go their separate ways for 2022.
The 27-year-old is not the first rider to split early with the WorldTour team. Marcel Kittel (2015), Warren Barguil, Edward Theuns (2018), Tom Dumoulin (2019), Michael Matthews (2020), Marc Hirschi (2021) all now Tiesj Benoot is also about to leave Team DSM early.
Last summer there were already struggles between Benoot and the team management, but that was dispelled by sports director Rudi Kemna in an interview with WielerFlits.
“There will always be minor internal frictions as we coach our riders to make them better. Not everyone always agrees right away. That doesn’t seem abnormal to me in relationships. Tiesj is mature enough to handle this,” Kemna said at the time.
Even though the peace seemed to have returned, it continues to rumble on at the DSM team, but there seems to be new struggles between the team and its Belgian leader.
