Remco Evenepoel said his helmet saved him from serious injuries after a high speed crash at the Tour of Norway.

The Belgian prodigy was caught in the crash during the closing metres of the opening stage, hitting the ground with several other riders.

Evenepoel posted on social media a picture of the helmet which shows major scrapes and damage to the top and front, saying it had saved him from a potentially serious situation.

The opening stage was won by Team Sunweb’s Cees Bol in a bunch sprint, while stage 2 was claimed by Remco Evenepoel’s teammate Alvaro Hodeg.
