Matxin: There is plenty of time for Pogacar to recover

Pogacar is still going on an altitude training before the Tour de France, UAE Team Emirates manager Joxean Fernández Matxin says.

Tadej Pogacar will go on an altitude training with his team UAE Team Emirates in the run-up to the Tour de France. That says sports manager Matxin, who still believes that the Slovenian can show up at the Tour in his best shape.

According to the doctors, Tadej Pogacar’s scaphoid fracture will take six weeks to heal after his crash in Liège-Bastogne-Liège last Sunday. But it will not prevent the winner of Paris-Nice, Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and Fleche Wallonne from using his legs as quickly as possible (first on the rollers, in a later stage on the road) and to work hard on his preparation for the Tour de France.

“Tadej is now taking three weeks of rest,” says Joxean Fernández Matxin. “Normally a wind tunnel test and the reconnaissance of a number of stages were on the program, but these are being scrapped. If all goes well, he will join the team at an altitude training.”

The question is whether Pogacar will also be ready for his ultimate practice race, the Tour of Slovenia (June 14-18). But the goal remains in any case to appear at the start of the Tour at its strongest on July 1. According to Matxin, this is not an impossible task.

“There is plenty of time for that, we think.”
