With just under 5km to go, the escapees were caught. The Italian national team took the lead ahead of Matteo Malucelli and Trek-Segafredo also tried to get thier sprint train on track. The American team managed to pilot Moschetti well in the last kilometre and the Italian started his sprint in an ideal position. Moschetti made it a long sprint, too long as it turned out, because Malucelli managed to come past to record his second victory of 2022.
For Malucelli, this victory in Giro di Sicilia is a big boost, as the future of his Gazprom-RusVelo team hangs by a thread and at the moment is not allowed to race with a Russian license.
“This has come at a difficult moment, and I hope this won’t be my last win as a professional because for the moment, I’m without a team,” Malucelli said.
“With my former team, we worked very well during the off-season in training camps, and the results were coming. Today we showed that we were on the right road and that we would have been dangerous this season.”
