Chris Froome produced one of the great performances of his career, attacking alone on the gravel road up Colle delle Finestre to win the 19th stage of the Giro d’Italia overnight and claim the pink jersey.
George Bennett finished the stage 12th and is poised to record New Zealand’s first top 10 finish in Giro history.
The LottoNL-Jumbo rider didn’t know the result of the stage when he arrived at the team’s bus and couldn’t believe that Froome had taken the overall lead.
“Did Froome stay away? No way!” Bennett said. “He did a Landis. Jesus! Are you kidding me?”
