The fourth stage of the Vuelta a San Juan finished with a reduced group sprint won by Fernando Gaviria.
In Barreal, the Colombian was the fastest in the sprint of a considerably thinned group. He beat Peter Sagan (TotalEnergies) and Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers), who tried to surprise fast men with a late attack. Gaviria is also the new leader of the Argentinian race.
“This team is like a big family and the way they have welcomed me is incredible, from the first camp in Pamplona in October,” said Gaviria. “That makes me very happy and makes me give a little more of myself.”
“Tomorrow we’ll go to the pool and rest,” Gaviria grinned. “Then I’ll be riding tranquillo up Colorado.”
Tomorrow is a rest day in San Juan, with the race set to continue on Friday with the queen stage.
