Jakob Fuglsang raced to a solo victory in the Il Lombardia after Remco Evenepoel was taken to hospital following a frightening crash into a ravine on Saturday.
The Belgian prodigy went over a bridge barrier during a descent but was “alive and conscious”, Italian television station RAI reported.
“Remco Evenepoel has been tended to by the doctors and is now taken to the hospital with the ambulance,” his Deceuninck-Quick-Step said in a statement.
Fuglsang went solo in the climb up to San Fermo della Battaglia and never looked back. The 35-year-old who won Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2019 timed his attack to perfection as he dropped George Bennett (Jumbo Visma) with around 6km to go and doubled his tally of monument wins in the process.
“I felt good but you never know how the others feel. I saw George Bennett was strong and he’d won a couple of days ago,” Fuglsang said.
“In the finale I told myself to wait for the sprint, I thought that I could beat him [Bennett] but when he attacked a second time I decided to go myself and he faded.”
Bennett held out for second place, 31 seconds behind the Dane, while Astana took their second slot on the podium with Aleksandr Vlasov in third.
