The Giro d’Italia entered in the 5th stage under heavy rain and the scare of Remco Evenepoel’s crash.
Only 22km into the stage, there was suddenly panic within Soudal Quick-Step teams as the world champion was involved in a fall caused by a stray dog. Davide Ballerini was the first to hit the ground and took Evenepoel with him in his fall.

Evenepoel remained down for a couple of minutes, but he finally got back on his bike and was then brought back to the peloton by his teammates.
After his fall, the Belgian gave a gaudy a thumbs up sign to the television cameras.
