Egan Bernal is getting closer to the version that won two grand tours. The accident that he suffered in 2022 and left him in a coma is more and more behind and the only Colombian in history who has won a Tour is once again enjoying riding a grand tour.
“The first week went very well, I think they were good stages, it was a good start to the Tour, obviously quite tough. I think that in general for the characteristics of the team, we have done quite well. Personally, I know that I am still not at the best level that I can reach at this moment, but I believe that things are going in the right direction,” Bernal says.
“In addition to legs, you have to wait for the right moment. I believe that no one is invincible and it has already been proven. Vingegaard has beaten Pogacar and he has beaten him very well. I believe that Vingegaard is a cyclist who can do very well, he is waiting for his moment, he doesn’t get carried away. And sometimes it’s better to have patience than to just do some exhibitions. It’s good for cycling, but also to win you have to race with a cool head,” says the Ineos rider.
Egan dreams of the Grand Slam. Winning Vuelta is one of his goals and everything indicates that he will be at the start of Lisbon on August 17.
“I hope so, in theory I’m going, but it also depends on how the Tour ends. One can come out very exhausted and in that state, it is not worth going to ride the Vuelta. But yes, I am doing everything possible, I am super focused and I want to do a very good Vuelta,” concludes Egan Bernal.
