Team Sky secured their first yellow jersey of the 2017 Tour de France as Geraint Thomas won the opening time trial in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Thomas clocked 16 minutes 4 seconds to take the race lead. Stefan Kung (BMC Racing) was second with Vasil Kiryienka (Team Sky) third in wet conditions.
“It’s an amazing feeling, it’s great to get that win,” Thomas said. “I’ve got a tendency to go out too hard but I am getting old now and learning my lessons. Today couldn’t have gone any better.”
Alejandro Valverde was the big victim of the day’s rain and crashed heavily against the fences in one of the curves. He was immediately taken to a hospital.
