4728m climbing, near 200 kilometers, 4 categorized climbing, a real hard stage. Can an escape group survived? It’s possible , the stage finishing downhill. Few years ago, a rider like Thomas de Gendt had enjoyed this kind of stage. But more probably favorites will end together, if Alejandro Valverde is still in head group he can win this stage.

This is a stage that has Bauke Mollema written all over it. The dutch is in Italy just to complete his trinity of grand tour stage wins but the question remains as to whether he will be allowed in the break or is he going to defend the Pink Jersey of Juan Pedro Lopez. Trek- Segafredo does not have the strength to hold this stage on their own and a break away win is expected. Harm Vanhoucke, Attila Valter, Tom Dumoulin, Felix Gall and even Vicenzo Nibali are riders that have lost some time and could be allowed to go for a stage win. Don’t be surprised either to see Mathieu Van der Poel having a day in the front with his new best friend Biniam Girmay.
