This marks the start of a new Giro. Chances for sprinters will be nearly null except for stage 18.

The finish could be flat but there are 3 category 3 climbs, the last one about 30 kilometers from finish line.

Rather than predicting the members of a breakaway, it is easier to assume that Van Der Poel will be vying for victory. We can rely on him to try to form the early breakaway , the second one or even setting the race alive the race by attacking solo from the last climb. In case the breakaway does not make it, Nizzolo, Consonni and Dainese should be able to get over the obstacles and fight for the win. Girmay might not be here anymore but Eritrea has another star in Natnael Tesfatsion, who took an amazing 8th place in a bunch sprint finish few days ago.

Mathieu Van Der Poel – Has saved some energy to be able to go to the win for a stage that is more appropriate for him.

Vincenzo Albanese – A very good sprinter that can also climb well.

Richard Carapaz – he has shown that he is the best sprinter among the GC contenders.

Romain Bardet – also possess a good sprint and could win if it is a reduced bunch.

Joao Almeida – He has been laying low but we know he can sprint well.

With up to 27 points for grab in the KOM jersey, contenders Diego Rosa and Koen Bouwman will form the breakaway. Bauke Mollema will definitely have another attempt at a stage victory as will Harm Vanhoucke. Vansevenant, Scmidt, Foss, Calmejane, Gall… the list of riders that will form the breakaway is truly impossible to predict but one name that will not be part of a successful break-away is Mathieu van der Poel. There will be little cooperation if the dutch is in the break but he still has his chance of victory by trying some of these attacks on the climbs.
