Remco Evenepoel has spoken for the first time since his crash in Il Lombardia, in which he broke his pelvis and injured his lungs.
The young Belgian says that he is already aiming at 2021 and that he wants to come back even stronger than he already was.
“I want to say that things are going very well for me at the moment. I had a good trip to a Belgian hospital. I want to thank all the people who have helped me over the last few days, from the crash to now. Unfortunately my season is finished. I am in no hurry and take all the time to return properly, physically and everything around it. I also want to thank my fans. You support me very much, but I cannot respond to all messages. Your support really touches me. That will certainly help me in a positive way,” the 20-year-old rider said.
“The team and I are positive about it and we are already looking forward to next year. We are going to build it up slowly. We will do everything we can to become an even better rider and to become even stronger than I already was.”
Due to his injury, Evenepoel misses out on his Grand Tour debut in this year’s Giro d’Italia. He also hoped for a good result at the World Championships.
