Edward Planckaert took a surprising victory on the first stage of the Vuelta a Burgos.

The Belgian from Alpecin-Fenix was faster than Movistar’s Gonzalo Serrano on the difficult arrival in Burgos.
“There was a big gap between the two pelotons [after the split]. I knew that they were coming back, I was just saving some energy for the last lap. And I won.”
“I’ll take it stage by stage, day by day. But the first stage uphill [stage three’s to Picon Blanco] will be the last.”
On the Alto del Castillo it was Romain Bardet who picked up the pace, but he was caught in the final.
Gonzalo Serrano seemed to give Movistar the victory on the uphill finish, but the Spaniard was passed in extremis by Edward Planckaert.
Vincenzo Albanese was third one second behind, while Santiago Buitrago and Bardet completed the top 5.
