Three-time world champion Peter Sagan will not be present at the World Championships in Imola on Sunday.

The Slovak rider will focus instead on the Giro d’Italia, which starts on October 3 in Sicily.

The world champion of Richmond (2015), Doha (2016) and Bergen (2017) announced earlier this month that the course in Imola would be too tough for him.

“I’m waiting for the end of this Tour to decide whether to participate or not. But according to how I estimate it based on the information that has come through, that World championships will be too hard for me.”

Sagan was looking for his eighth green jersey in the Tour de France, but lost out to Sam Bennett in the fight. His next goal is the Giro d’Italia, where he will start for the first time in his career.
