Mikkel Bjerg of Denmark was crowned U23 World Championship time trial champion after a blistering ride in Bergen, Norway.
The route was 37.2 kilometers long, divided into a short lap of 16.1 kilometers and a long lap of 21.1 kilometers. The long lap included a short climb up the Birkelundsbakken.
Bjerg’s time of 47 minutes 6 seconds left him 1 minute 6 seconds clear at the top of the standings, with USA’s Brandon McNulty second and France’s Corentin Ermanault third.
“It’s unbelievable. I can’t really understand it now,” said Bjerg. “This is the biggest result of my career.”
“I think me and Brandon we did pretty similar last year, and he was unlucky to break his pelvis in the first part of the season,” Bjerg, 18, added. “He came back, and I think his effort today is really remarkable.”
