Mathieu van der Poel was back into action to win the Dutch national championships, attacking from the lead group in the final 45 kilometers to ride solo to the line.
At the end, Van der Poel crossed the finish line solo, winning by 1min31s, and claimed the Dutch title for the second time. Sunweb’s Nils Eekhoff and Jumbo-Visma’s Timo Roosen completed the podium.
“I had a pretty good day today. It was very difficult and you didn’t get a moment’s rest,” Van der Poel said. “It was one of the toughest races I have ever done.”
One day before, Boels-Dolmans’ Anna van der Breggen took the victory of the women’s race by crossing the finish line solo, 1min19s ahead of World Champion Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott).
