Alexandre Geniez (AG2R) emerged victorious in a four-man sprint to win 2017 Tre Valli Varesine. Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) was second, with Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) third.
“It’s a great feeling to win a race like this at the end of the season,” Geniez said. “We looked at the start list this morning and realised it’s a real race, but we said we wanted to win it.”
The last remaining riders from the day’s break were caught inside the final eight kilometres, then Nibali played his hand when he accelerated fiercely on the final climb, slightly under three kilometres from the finish. Pinot was able to go with him and the duo pushed on, but chasing by others behind kept the gap manageable.
Geniez then jumped across in the final kilometre, with Ulissi bridging soon afterwards. However despite his normal brisk finish, he was had nothing left and Geniez was best in the four man gallop.
