Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) won stage 4 of the Vuelta a San Juan as Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck–Quick-Step) retained his lead in the general classification.
“Molano and Richeze dropped me off at the line at just the right moment and I was able to capitalize on it,” said Gaviria, who also won stage 2. “I’m really happy with my condition and looking forward to the second half of the race.”
The GC battle is likely to be decided in the summit finish atop category 1 climb Alto Colorado on stage 5, Friday. Though not known for his climbing abilities, race-leader Evenepoel has every intention of defending his GC lead on the mountain.
“We defended the jersey [today] and we’ll try do it again Friday, on the Alto del Colorado, which is a long and pretty unusual climb,” said the 20-year-old after the race.
