Remco Evenepoel will pin a jersey number again on Sunday, eleven days after his crash and abandon in the Giro d’Italia. The Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider makes his appearance in the Elfstedenronde.
Evenepoel left the Giro with multiple abrasions and contusions of the second metacarpal in his left hand, his radius, elbow, pelvic joints, kneecap and rib. However, the rider now appears to have recovered sufficiently to participate in the Elfstedenronde on Sunday, a 1.1 course of 193 kilometers over the Belgian cobblestone sections with start and finish in Bruges.
What his further preparation for the Olympic Games in Tokyo will look like afterwards has not yet been determined. Evenepoel and his team will meet on Saturday to discuss further planning, team boss Patrick Lefevere told Het Laatste Nieuws.
According to Het Nieuwsblad, there is a chance that Evenepoel will also appear at the start of the Belgium Tour. This stage race will be held from 9 to 13 June. The Belgian Championship time trial (16 June) and the Belgian Championship on the road (20 June) in Waregem are also possible test competitions in the run-up to the Olympics in Tokyo.
