In the penultimate lap of the Azencross, Mathieu van der Poel crashed dramatically. He didn’t move for several minutes and the incident put a serious damper on the festivities.
Van der Poel was carried off on a stretcher but the extent of his injuries is still unknown. Wout van Aert won the race, Tom Meeusen finished second and Kevin Pauwels completed the podium.
“I’m ok, nasty crash which was my own fault but I got lucky after all. Thanks for all the messages!”, Van der Poel announced on Twitter.
