Movistar has announced that Alejandro Valverde has extended his contract as a rider until 2021 and will remain working with the team until at least 2024.
The team and the rider did the announcement in Murcia -the hometown of the World Champion and the place where the Spanish National Championships are being held. There they confirmed that the Spaniard has renewed his contract until 2021 and that he will continue working in the formation until at least 2024.
Valverde has taken one victory in the Vuelta a España, one title in the World Championships, and multiple wins in important races like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, La Fleche Wallone, the Volta a Catalunya, the Criterium du Dauphine and stage victories in the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España, which makes him one of the most successful riders ever in the country.
“I am very happy about this renewal,” said Valverde. “Everybody knows that Movistar Team is my home. I’ve always felt very loved and respected here and I am happy to continue with the team for two more years. It gives me tranquillity to keep working and enjoying on the bike. We will fight hard for new victories, all that are possible, and I will also help my teammates to achieve big successes in the future.”
“We feel privileged of enjoying all this time of someone with the sports value and human dimension of Alejandro,” Eusebio Unzue explained. “He has brought us big successes and, of course, he has given us many lessons beyond the victories.
“His recovery in 2017 after that serious injury he sustained in the Tour de France, his persistence to look for many victories, the exceptional treatment that he has always given to anyone in his surroundings, making him essential to us. He is a leader on and off the road. I hope in these next years he can keep enjoying the sport in the way he always does.”
