Iwan Spekenbrink has not only secured the future of his cycling team for the next three years, but also strengthened the team’s position in the WorldTour peloton as PostNL is also joining the Dutch cycling team in addition to DSM–Firmenich.
DSM–Firmenich and PostNL will become equal main sponsors of the team and the budget will grows due to the joint contribution. For Spekenbrink, this probably means the largest budget for his team since the founding of his team.
Just after the successful years of 2017 and 2018 of the team under the name Team Sunweb with Tom Dumoulin, Warren Barguil and Michael Matthews, the budgets in cycling have increased due to the arrival of billionaire Jim Ratcliffe (INEOS Grenadiers) and the oil dollars from UAE, among others.
While DSM–Firmenich focuses mainly on the international market, PostNL is a major player in the Dutch and Belgian markets. PostNL is the largest mail and parcel delivery company in the Netherlands, while it is also active with parcels in Belgium.
It had been known for some time that PostNL, which employs more than 35000 people, was looking into a sponsorship project in sports. The logistics company with its head office in Hague is said to have a preference for cycling because this is a sport that stands for more movement and sustainability and is very accessible to the general public.
Many company employees cycle every day, regardless of weather, to deliver the mail in the Netherlands. This creates a close bond with the cyclists who brave all conditions every day to ride their bike.
DSM–firmenich PostNL has already recruited 29 riders for 2024. In addition to Fabio Jakobsen, Gijs Leemreize, Timo Roosen, Julius van den Berg and Bram Welten are also new to the team. In addition to Jakobsen, the experienced Bardet, Barguil and Degenkolb are the leaders of the team.
