Jordi Meeus (Bora – hansgrohe) sprinted to the biggest victory of his career on stage five of the Tour of Britain in Mansfield, on Thursday.

Meeus edged out Stanisław Aniolkowski (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB) and Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers).

Pidcock, second overall, now sits just three seconds back on Gonzalo Serrano on the general classification. Omar Fraile lies third on general classification, seven seconds in arrears.

The British rider said: “It was a successful day. We controlled the break, wanted to make sure there was nothing dangerous happening there, do a good lead-out and try to get some bonus seconds. That is what we did. I don’t think I’m quick enough to win a bunch sprint but getting some bonus seconds is exactly what we wanted to do.

“Three seconds is a lot of time bonuses on the road. Of course, that’s what the goal is. I think I really messed up on the first day, that is probably the stage I could have done better on.
