Michael Valgren took his first victory in three years as he became the first Danish winner of the Giro della Toscana.
The EF Education-Nippo rider made the decisive move with 14.3km remaining, attacking solo. Alessandro De Marchi, riding for the Italian national team, finished second, while Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) completed the podium.
It is Valgren’s first victory since the 2018 Amstel Gold Race.
“I know the Monte Serra climb really well as I lived in Luca during my first year as a pro,” said Michael Valgren. “I like the climb a lot so it was special to be up there fighting for the win.”
“This is a race for climbers and I’m not really a climber so I had to dig really deep. This was definitely special.”
