Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) won the second stage of the Tour de l’Ain after he bridged across alone to a break of five riders with 2km remaining.
The German outsprinted Michael Storer (DSM) and Harm Vanhoucke (Lotto Soudal) to claim his first professional victory and to take the lead in the general classification.
Zimmermann leads Storer by 4 seconds and Vanhoucke by 6 seconds ahead of Saturday’s queen stage.
“I missed the decisive attack and I blamed myself for that. When I had the chance to make the jump, I gave everything I had. I felt very strong and made it to the leading group,” said Zimmermann after the finish.
“Then I tried to recover some of that effort. I decided to take the last corner first because it started to rain and it was a tight corner. In the sprint I gave everything and it was enough for my first professional victory. I am very happy with that.”
