Wout van Aert was forced to withdraw from the Vuelta a Espana following a crash during a descent, where he sustained injuries to his legs and arms. The accident occurred with more than 50km left in the stage.

The Visma rider was descending on a slippery road on the run to Lagos de Covadonga when fellow breakaway rider Felix Engelhardt lost control. Van Aert attempted to avoid a collision but was unable to maintain control, sending him careering into the rocky roadside.

At the time of his withdrawal, the Belgian was leading both the points and king of the mountains rankings.

Van Aert’s abandon leaves the lead of both the sprint and mountains competitions to his rivals, Kaden Groves and Jay Vine.
