Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) claimed his second victory of the season, powering to the line to take a close sprint victory ahead of Danny van Poppel (Jumbo-Visma), on the second and longest stage in Ruta del Sol.
It was touch and go, as to whether Trentin could make it to the line before Ivan García Cortina (Bahrain-Merida), who held a small gap in the final few hundred metres after launching his sprint early. In the end, the 29-year-old Italian timed his sprint to perfection, blasting down the final 200metres to pass Cortina.
“It was really hard, probably the longest final kilometre ever,” the reigning European Road-Race champion said.
“It was chaotic because everyone wanted to sit on the front but of course after quite an easy stage today, everybody had the legs to be there. I got boxed in quite a lot on the last corner and Cortina got the jump. I saw he was pretty far away dragging uphill and I timed my sprint the best I could and it was just perfect.”
Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) kept the overall lead after Thursday’s stage, thanks to his victory on the uphill finish in stage 1.
