For 25 years, Marco Pantani was the last rider to win both the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia in one season, but the famous Italian now has a successor. Tadej Pogacar did not encounter any problems in the final time trial to Nice today and managed to achieve the double.
“This is the first Grand Tour where I was totally confident everyday, even in the Giro I remember I had one bad day but I won’t tell which one!”, said Pogacar after winning the last stage time trial. “This Tour de France was amazing, I was enjoying from day 1 until today and I had such great support behind me. I just couldn’t let anyone down so I was enjoying it for them as well.
“Maybe some people would think the Giro was a safety net if I don’t succeed in the Tour de France, and for sure it would be if I didn’t succeed. To win the Tour de France is another level and to win both together is another level above that level! I’m really happy we did it.”
