Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) claimed the queen stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia in impressive fashion, catching and beating Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) in the last kilometer.
Contador attacked early on the finishing climb, quickly opening a gap over a chasing group of Pinot and the Team Sky trio of Wout Poels, Diego Rosa, and Mikel Landa as race leader Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) seemed to be in trouble behind.
Thibaut Pinot bridged the gap to Contador in sight of the finish line, overhauling him with 200 metres to go and claiming the stage victory.
Valverde limited the damage, finishing only seven seconds behind Pinot and five seconds behind Contador, but still loses his leader’s jersey to Contador who now has a three-second advantage over Pinot.
