Vincenzo Nibali timed his move to perfection to claim Milan-San Remo as he just held off the sprint specialists to became the first Italian to win the “Primavera” since 2006.
“After a very wet start, fortunately, the rain didn’t affect the final part of this year’s Milano-Sanremo and thanks to the slower pace as well, the selection was less and the group to arrive at the finish quite a lot bigger,” Peter Sagan said.
“We worked very well throughout the day and at the start of the climb on the Poggio we were well positioned at the front. Then Nibali attacked and I remained with the group of sprinters as we thought he would be caught and the race would finish with a bunch sprint. However, Nibali proved very strong and was able to hold on and take the win.”
“Congratulations to Vincenzo, he deserved it. This victory is good for Italy and the sport of cycling in general,” Sagan said.
The world champion later tweeted: “Thanks to all my @BORAhansgrohe teammates for their hard work today at the @Milano_Sanremo. Congratulations also from my side to @vincenzonibali for his attack and victory. He was the only one to show he had the balls today!”
