Los Angeles Olympics to clash with 2028 Tour de France

There will be a clash in the calendar between the Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the Tour de France in 2028 after the International Olympic Committee has announced the dates of the next Summer Games.

With the biggest sporting event taking place from Friday 14 July to Sunday 30 July, the Tour de France will have to shift considerably on the calendar.

“What date will the Tour get in 2028? That is not up to us”, says Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme. “The UCI decides that. We will see. Whether the Tour will be before or after the Olympic Games? I have no idea.”

Furthermore, it was a ‘sacred’ condition for the Tour de France to have a stage on France’s national day on July 14. In 2028, the opening ceremony of the Summer Games in Los Angeles will take place on  July 14.

Los Angeles also has a disadvantage in terms of time zone and travel distance for the Tour de France riders. There is a time difference of nine hours compared to Paris, while a direct flight from Paris to Los Angeles takes 11 hours and 35 minutes.
