Joao Almeida narrowly missed fifth place in final general classification of the Giro d’Italia as he was five hundredths of a second short of Daniel Martinez.
“I am happy to finish in the top ten again”, said Almeida. “Despite three tough weeks I felt pretty good and focused on a good time trial today. I am pleased with this result, especially on a flat course like this”,
The Portuguese gave up 27 seconds to last stage winner Filippo Ganna, but in the overall standings he overtook Romain Bardet and Hugh Carthy. A pinnacle of a strong last week, which he started as number 13 in the GC.
“A sixth place in the final standings is a very good result,” said Almeida. “I’m happy to finish in the top ten again. It was a good Giro d’Italia for me, a race in which I learned a lot and saw that I improved in the high mountains where I could stay with the real climbers.”
