Jesus David Pena took his first professional win as his teammate Filippo Zana finished second on stage four of the Tour of Slovenia to take the general classification lead, on a chaotic day.
Pena suffered a crash during the stage and Italian Champion Zana also came down later while leading the race. The young Colombian, who had been in a small chasing group behind his teammate, passed him and was able to stay away for the final kilometres of the stage to claim victory.
Zana managed to remount his bike and finish in second place in a brave ride that earned him the overall lead heading into the final day tomorrow.
Diego Ulissi finished third and is only one second behind Zanna in the general classification with one stage to go.
“I’m really, really happy for this first victory in Europe. I’ve been having a difficult season with some issues, but I had good legs and the team gave me the opportunity,” said Pena.
“In the first descent I had a crash, and when I saw Filippo had crashed I thought I had to stop for him but the DS told me he was ok, and to try to go on for the stage win. It’s an important first win for me and nice Zana was also second.”
