Mexican top talent Isaac Del Toro will compete for the world titles in the U23 category next week in Switzerland.

Matxin Fernández, the team manager of the 20-year-old rising star, confirmed the news. Del Toro established his name as an absolute top talent last year with a win in the Tour de l’Avenir, after which he signed a contract with UAE Emirates until 2029.

This season he started strongly with a stage win at the Tour Down Under and a victory at the Vuelta Asturias. But he didn’t got the results his fans were waiting in his first grand tour start at the Vuelta a Espana.

“I would still say that he rode a good Vuelta”, says Matxin. “He was good in the first week, but then he got sick. Isaac suffered from headaches and dysentery and suffered badly for two days, after which he never fully recovered. He was no longer in his optimal form, but fortunately he got better towards the end in the last three to four days. He also thought about giving up, but he still came out of the Vuelta mentally stronger.”

Del Toro now wants to make something of the last weeks of his first professional season. According to Matxin, he is aiming for both the road race and the time trial for the U23 riders. European champion Alec Segaert seems to be the man to beat against the clock, while Del Toro will encounter European champion Huub Artz, Jarno Widar and Jan Christen in the road race.
