Dylan Groenewegen sprinted to victory on the opening stage at the Tour of Slovenia.
The Dutchman was set up to open his sprint at 300 metres to go by local Slovenian rider Luka Mezgec, as a late breakaway was caught right at the end.
Groenewegen held off a very close challenge from Phil Bauhaus right to the finish line to take the win and assume the overall race lead.
“It was a really hard stage. Bora and Tudor decided to go on the attack on the climbs and that made it really hard for a sprinter like me,” said Groenewegen.
“The team spent the whole day working to catch the break, and bring me up into position. Then in the end we used the whole team to catch the breakaway”.
“Luka did an amazing lead out. He’s really motivated! He did a training camp and is in good shape and today he did a textbook lead out.”
