Once upon a time, Italian cyclists won the Giro dell’Emilia cycling race held in Northern Italy’s Bologna just about every year. As recently as the 1990s, Italian cyclists took home the Giro dell’Emilia title eight out of ten years. So, could this be the year an Italian cyclist breaks back through to win the Giro dell’Emilia 2024? Either way, this one-day race, scheduled to take place on October 5, will once again be one of the top races to watch this year. Slovenian cyclist Primož Roglič will be back to defend his 2023 title, which was the third Giro dell’Emilia of his career. He has won every other year over the course of the last six years.
If Roglič is going to carry out a successful defense of his 2023 victory, he’ll have to do battle with the notoriously difficult Giro dell’Emilia 2024 route. It’ll have participants starting in Bologna before working their way through Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park. It’ll then end back in Bologna, but not before cyclists need to navigate a climbing ring near the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca that includes the Orfanelle climb and the Montalbano climb as well as the Casaglia downhill portion of the race.
The Giro dell’Emilia is a historic race that has been held almost every year since 1905. Several legendary cyclists made names for themselves by winning the Giro dell’Emilia race over time, including Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali, and Eddy Merckx. More recent examples like Roglič have also used their success in the Giro dell’Emilia to begin building their legacies.
The cyclists expected to ride during the Giro dell’Emilia 2024 include Roglič and his fellow Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar, who he narrowly edged out to win in 2023. Pogačar has been every bit as impressive as Roglič in recent years, having won the Giro di Lombardia, or Il Lombardia, race three years in a row. Pogačar also dominated at the Tour de France this year and could put a stamp on his 2024 efforts with a win at the Giro dell’Emilia.
Both Roglič and Pogačar will have their work cut out for them at the Giro dell’Emilia 2024, though. Jonas Vingegaard, Mathieu Van der Poel, Wout Van Aert, Remco Evenepoel, and Egan Bernal are just some of the cyclists who could put a damper on their days by outpacing them during this event.
It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Roglič and Pogačar claiming the top spot at the Giro dell’Emilia 2024. But that’s one of the things that makes this event so compelling. When you combine the history of this race along with its competitive route, anyone could theoretically take home a win, possibly even one of the Italian cyclists who have been shut out for the last few years.
