Fernando Gaviria will ride for the first time in a Movistar jersey in the Vuelta a San Juan (January 22-29).
For Gaviria it is the fifth time that he will appear at the start of the Argentinian race. The Colombian has won eight stages in the Vuelta a San Juan and was also very successful in the past in the Tour de San Luis.
Gaviria hopes to give his career a new kick-start with Movistar after the past few seasons have not been very successful for him, partly due to illness and injuries. In 2021 he only achieved one victory and this year he had two wins.
UAE Team Emirates decided not to extend his expiring contract and the team’s manager ‘Matxin’ Fernandez recently criticised Gaviria.
“He really needs to change something mentally”, he said. “He has to do something about his motivation, in order to raise his level again. Fernando is really a super talent, in my opinion he is one of the best sprinters in the world. The problem is just his work ethic”
