Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) has won the final stage in the Tour of California as Egan Bernal (Team Sky) secured the general classification after taking the leader’s jersey from Tejay Van Garderen yesterday.
Gaviria sprinted to victory in Sacramento, beating Max Walscheid (Team Sunweb) and Caleb Ewan (Mitchelton-Scott).
Bernal, a runner-up in last month’s Tour of Romandie, won Monday’s second stage and also captured Friday’s penultimate stage to overtake Tejay van Garderen.
The Colombian seized his final victory margin and Team Sky dominated the front of the peloton on Saturday, keeping Bernal’s lead from being threatened in the 143km final flat stage.
Daniel Martinez of Education First was third overall, 2:14 off the pace, with Adam Yates fourth, another two seconds adrift, and Tao Geoghegan Hart fifth, 2:28 back.
