In 1972, in Mexico City, at an altitude of 2,300m (7,550 ft) Eddy Merckx set a Hour Record of 49.431 km (30.715 mi) that stood for 12 years.
“The Cannibal” started that year winning Milan-San Remo. He then won Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France and another monument, Giro di Lombardia as well as many other races. Then he attacked the Hour Record.
