Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) claimed his first win in Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne after out-sprinting Arnaud Démare (FDJ) and Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) on Sunday.
Démare launched his sprint with 300m to go, working his way around the tiring late-race breakaway riders Julien Duval (AG2R La Mondiale), Julien Vermote (Dimension Data) and Loic Vliegen (BMC Racing), but Groenewegen was biding his time in Démare’s wheel, and came around the Frenchman to take his third victory of the year.
This was the second race of the weekend that kick starts the spring classics season, following Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, won by Michael Valgren on Saturday.
“We came into the Kwaremont and it all broke up. My teammates brought me back perfectly. When we got back, Stuyven was still a bit further up but we caught him and in the final kilometres I was able to put myself into the right position,” said Groenewegen. “We were coming from behind with a fair amount of speed so I was able to come around Arnaud Démare. I do like these kinds of races and I like it when it is harder.”
